Read Week

We are having an AMAZING Read Week 2018!! Here is a glimpse into our week in Moss World!

Monday

Today's dress-up day was Career Day.  The kiddos looked great in all their career's of choice!

We had five Mystery Readers today!

Yareli's mom, Mrs. Nevel, was our first Mystery Reader today.  She read Cowardly Clyde and "I Can't" Said the Ant.

Mrs. Kimble, our Home School Communicator, was our second Mystery Reader today.  She read The Water Princess.  In this book the kiddos had to think about how it would be to not have running water and have to walk miles and miles everyday to get water to drink, to cook, and to bathe in.

Our third Mystery Reader was Reese's grandpa, Mr. Moseley!  The book he read to us was called Tell Me About Truman the Tiger and we learned all about Truman the Tiger!  We learned that the University of Missouri's mascot was not always called Truman or looked liked Truman.  We also went to the History of the Mascot web page to see pictures of the older mascots.  If you would like to read more about MU's mascot history click here.

Jack's mom, Mrs. McGinty, was our fourth Mystery Reader today.  She read Tops and Bottoms, a fun story about a rabbit who "tricks" a lazy bear.  We learned that the lesson that the author was trying to teach was to not be lazy and you have to work hard for what you get.  This book is special because it is actually signed by the author, Janet Stevens!

Our final Mystery Reader of the day was Mrs. Ragsdale, Dylan's mom.  She read two books What If You Had Animal Hair and Ivan the Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla.  The kiddos got to see what life would be like if they had different animal hair - ask you kiddo what his/her favorite animal hair would be and why!

What a great Monday!  We can't wait to see what Tuesday brings!

Tuesday

Today's dress-up day was Book Character Day.  It was so neat to see all the kiddos in dressed up as their favorite book characters!

Today we had seven Mystery Readers!

Our first Mystery reader was Macey's mom, Mrs. Putnam.  She read us two super funny books 17 Things I'm Not Allowed to Do Anymore, and Interrupting Chicken.  She also read us on her favorite books from when she taught first grade The Library.  Mrs. Putnam also brought jelly beans for us to enjoy!

Calder's dad, Mr. Sicht, was our second Mystery reader.  He read and Calder read Green Eggs and Ham with a great voice!  Then he read Each Kindness which taught the lesson that it is important to be kind to everyone.

During snack, Aaron's brother, Evan read to us Duck on a Bike!

After recess, Haden's mom, Mrs. Lingenfelter, was our fourth Mystery Reader.  She read us one of the kiddos favorite books The Book With No Pictures.  After she read, we got to enjoy a Dunkin Donuts munchkin while we worked on our writing!

Mrs. Rhonda, our office secretary, was our fifth Mystery Reader after lunch.  She read us a fractured fairy tale of Goatilocks and the Three Bears.  Goatilocks ended up eating LOTS of different things in the house!

Our sixth Mystery Reader was Ms. Branham, she is a student teacher in kindergarten, but spent a few weeks with us earlier in the school year.  She was dressed up as the mouse in If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, so of course she read us that book!  She also read After the Fall.

Reese's aunt, Mrs. Brumwell, was our final Mystery Reader of the day.  She read a book called "I Remember" Cried Grandma Pinky.  She also brought us a fun treat of a piece of bubble gum to enjoy this afternoon!

I wonder what Mystery Readers will be with us tomorrow?

Wednesday

Today's dress-up day was Hat & Sunglasses, but I forgot to get a picture - sorry!

We had eight Mystery Readers today!  The kiddos are LOVING hearing all the different books, some that are totally favorites and and some that are new to the students.

Will and Matt's dad, Mr. Rysdam, was our first reader this morning.  He read The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors. The kiddos were super excited to see this book make an appearance this morning - it's one of their favorites!

Our second Mystery Reader was Yareli's mom, Mrs. Nevels.  She read Tikki Tikki Tembo, which was a faux pas story about why Chinese names are typically shorter.  She also read Pancakes, Pancakes! and we discussed Eric Carle's illustrations and if we would have to do everything that the kids in the book had to do to make pancakes.

Ms. Shockley, one of our MU students who is with us on Wednesday read The Seven Silly Eaters.  If you haven't read this book it is a good one - especially if you have had an experience with a picky eater!

Mrs. McKinizie came in and read to us this morning also!  She read Memoirs of a Hamster.  We had a discussion about what a memoir is.  Some of the students had already read Memoirs of a Goldfish and Memoirs of an Elf, but we just found out there is a new book in the series Memoirs of a Parrot - we can't wait to read this book also!

Before counselor Mr. Smith read us Gaston.

After lunch Ben's dad, Mr. Jones, read us two books.  We were surprised of how many students had not read his first book, The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash, We talked about Steven Kellogg's great illustrations!  The second book Mr. Jones read was Tooth-Gnasher Superflash, which is about a family buying a new car.

Noelle's mom and brother were our sixth Mystery Readers.  Eli read Mother Bruce - which is another favorite (there are also two other books in this series: Hotel Bruce & Bruce's Big Move).  Mrs. Novak read If I Built a House, which is the second book in the series.  The kiddos enjoyed listening to these two books!

Our final Mystery Reader on Wednesday was Ella's brother, Keller.  Keller read How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  Which was a fun way to end our day!

Thursday

Our first mystery reader was Mrs. Neale.  She read ( and sang) We Shall Overcome: The Story of a Song.  We talked about the importance of helping others and fighting against injustice using our words and song.  She also read The Book With No Pictures to lighten the mood.

Our second mystery reader today was Ms. Katherine.  She read Lemonade for Sale and  A New Coat for Anna.  She said A New Coat for Anna is one of her favorite books to read aloud and she loved it as a child also.

Our third mystery reader today was Tristan's sister, Emma.  The siblings are always excited to see their siblings come to the door.  She read The Day the Crayons Quit.

Our fourth mystery reader today was Ben's mom, Mrs. Jones and his brothers.  They read Caps for Sale and Rosie's Walk.  The kids thought the illustrations in Rosie's Walk were funny because they don't match the story at all.  The story is about a chicken going for a walk, but the illustrations show a fox following the chicken and causing problems.

Our fifth mystery reader was Tre'Shawn's mom, Ms. Eubanks.  She read Buz.

Our sixth mystery reader was Ms. Dakota.  She works with the kids during the week. She brought her therapy bird, Zorro, with her.  She read Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch

Our next reader was Mrs. Richardson.  She read The Little White Owl.

Our final reader was Dylan.  He dressed up as Corduroy this week and wanted to read the book.

Tomorrow is Reading with the Stars put on by Mrs. McKinzie in the library.
