Schedules
Components of the Day
Whole Group Instruction
Morning Meeting:
Our Morning Meeting is designed to be able to get to know our classroom community better. We will talk about what our day is going to look like, calendar work and number of the day.
Literacy:
The CPSElementary@Mizzou will be using a combined approach to teach your child literacy. Mizzou Academy has developed a literacy program and CPS has also adopted a new English Language Arts (literacy) program this year called Benchmark. I will be using the resources to help your child to grow as a reader and a writer.
Our Literacy block in the morning on Zoom I will incorporate both reading and writing workshop. I will be using mentor texts to show students what great readers and writers do. Students will then practice these skills independently in the afternoon. I will be using the afternoon time to pull groups to focus on specific skills your child needs.
My goal is for your child to have a love for reading and writing!
Fundations & Heggerty:
Fundations is our phonics program that CPS uses preschool-second grade. Phonics teaches students how to decode (tap out/sound out) words during reading and how to encode (tap out/spell) words in their writing. We will cover a variety of spelling patterns, Trick Words (words that are tricky & that cannot be tapped out), and reading fluency/comprehension.
Heggerty is our phonemic awareness program that CPS uses in kindergarten & first grade. Phonemic awareness is being able to hear, identify and manipulate individual sounds in words.
Both of these will be taught whole group during Zoom but I will provide additional independent Fundations practice for the afternoon time for.
I want for your child to love math and be problem solver! The CPSElementary@Mizzou will be using a combined approach to teach your child math. The Mizzou Academy has developed a math materials and CPS uses Everyday Math is our math curriculum. I will be using this curriculum along with the math strategies that I am learning in my Masters program to instruct your child.
There are lots of things that your child will learn in math this year! We will be having lots of mathematical discussions and sharing of strategies. We will be working on number fluency and reasoning. Of course I want students to be able to solve math problems but a lot of our focus will be on the how did you solve it.
Your child will have opportunities to practice math skill during the independent practice.
Science and social studies is often a favorite subject for students! Through our literacy materials we will have opportunities to read and write about science and social studies subjects. During our set aside Science time, will be an opportunity to have more in-depth conversations about what we are learning. My goal is for your child to be inquisitive and excited about learning!
During our community read aloud times, will be a time where I will incorporate some social studies content.
The Community Read Aloud time is an opportunity for us to just enjoy reading together as a class community! Most of the time it will be me sharing some of favorite books, but sometimes we will have guest readers. If you would like to be a guest reader just let me know! :)
Trailblazer Time!
Small Group Instruction:
Reading small group instruction will focus on applying skills that were taught in during whole group instruction into independent work. I will also be able to focus on specific areas that each students are needing extra practice.
Lots of the math small group time will be having math talks with students. Math talks provide students opportunities to solve problems, share their thinking and learn from other student's strategies. Some small group instruction will also be focused on areas where students are needing extra practice.
After getting to know the students during the first week of class, I will be working on developing a small group schedules. My goal will be for these times to be consistent throughout the first trimester to help with planning for your family; however, these small groups are truly focused on what students are needing and might need to be tweaked a little throughout the trimester.
While your child is not scheduled for a small group there will be assignments for your child to work on and complete. My goal for these assignments is that your child will be able to work on these independently; however, in the beginning your child may need extra support.
Independent Work:
This will be a time that your child will be offline and finishing up any assignments that were not able to be complete during the small group time. I will have our class Zoom open for students/parents to be able to pop in and ask questions about assignments.
Office Hours
I am here to support your family as we navigate together this year of virtual online learning. We are in this together! Please remember that this is also my first year teaching online and this is new to me also. My office hours are times that are built into my day for us to be able to communicate with each other. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Specials
Your child has access to online lessons through Schoology. These are the same lessons and activities that CPS Elementary students are receiving from their building specialists.
Special Education/504 Students
Students that receive either Special Education or 504 services should have been contacted by Special Services to discuss options. I will work closely CPS learning specialist, therapists and 504 case managers to ensure that your child is provided with the needed modifications and accommodations.
English Learners (EL) Students
If your child receives EL services, you will be contacted by your home building's EL teacher. There will be an opportunity to participate either in online EL services or in person EL groups (you must provide transportation to and from school). I will work closely with your child's EL teacher to support your child in the classroom.

- Media Specialist: Amy McKinzie
- Reading Interest Survey
- Video on the Library Checkout Process
- Media Specialist: Erin White
- Informational Smore
At Home Learning Space
It is important to develop an at home learning space for your child(ren). Without a learning space children can get distracted, might not have the supplies that are need, and there's no consistency or the idea of "going to school". This space doesn't have to be fancy but it needs to be consistent. Your child(ren)'s learning space might be in a corner of the living, at a folding table/chair, or at the dinning room table. In a place that makes sense for your family!- iPad & charger (please make sure that this is ready every morning).
- Paper, pencil, scissors, glue, markers, crayons, color pencils
- Fundations materials (sent home at device pickup)
- Work material packet (sent home at device pickup)
- Class schedule
- Light
- As the year goes on, we might add to these materials but this will be a great start! :)
