Happy Friday!

We have had a wonderful week of school!

Curriculum Chat
We have been working EXTREMELY hard on our "A Day in the Life of a Second Grader" video and book.  They are are almost complete and ready for your viewing pleasure at Curriculum Chat on Tuesday.  As a reminder, Curriculum Chat is this Tuesday, September 20 from 7:45-8:15.  The video will be starting at 7:45.  After the video plays, the kiddos will be showing you everything that they have been working on during the first 5 weeks of school (I cannot believe it has already been 5 weeks!!).

Maker Space
Today we had Maker Space.  This is always one of the kiddos favorite times on Friday!! :)  Today they played with Makey Makey.  This system allowed them to make circuits to play the bongos, piano, or pause music on a laptop.  They created these circuits through PlayDoh, fruit, and even themselves!!

Chicken BBQ
The 59th Annual RBE Chicken BBQ is October 15.    Coming home in your child's Friday Folder is a bag full of information.  Inside the bag there are forms for buying food & game tickets, donating pies, etc.  This is the big money raiser for our PTA.  The PTA uses the money each year to provide funding for field trips, technology, classroom supplies, and so many other things.  I hope that you are able to make it!

Eat Out Fundraisers
Mark your calendars for a reason to NOT cook!!! :)

  • On Monday & Tuesday (9/19 & 9/20) Texas Roadhouse is donating a portion of every person's bill that mentions or brings in the flyer (the flyer is coming home in your child's Friday Folder) to RBE.
  • McTeacher Night is October 4.  A percentage of the total sales between 4-8 pm will be given to RBE.
Both are great ways for RBE to earn some money!

Spelling Word
Our spelling words for next week are: word, work, here, how, try, over, month, as, does, and able.  We have added the words to your child's homework.  Your child is not required to practice spelling these words as part of their homework, but it is recommended to study them nightly

Math
This week is math, we focused on solving word problems, understanding place value, and introduced expanded form.  We learned a new game called Digit Place (this is a new game that your child can play for homework).  Directions to play this game can be found on the homework section of the blog.  Next week, we will work more with expanded form.  Expanded form is stretching a standard number out and representing each numeral with it's value.  For example: 394 in expanded form is 300+90+4 because the 3 is worth 300, and the 9 is worth 90.

Reading
In reading, we have focused on identifying the setting of a book or passage.  The setting includes the where and the when.  The when does not have to be overly specific (example: the setting of Owl Moon is in the country in the winter).  For the next two weeks, we will be looking at the problem and solution in stories.

Writing
For the last two weeks, we have been working really hard on our A Day in the Life of a Second Grader book for Curriculum Chat.  We also talked about that authors describe the setting of their story using their five sense.  We read the first 5 pages of Owl Moon and had a conversation about what Jane Yolen did as an author to provide clues and description of the setting of her story.  The kiddos then started writing their descriptive setting for their personal narrative.  Next week, we will working on our personal narratives full time during writing.

Social Studies
We introduced the Social Studies station during our Reading Stations this week.  We talked about different symbols of the United States.  Some of the symbols we talked about were the American Flag, the Pledge of Allegiance, the Bald Eagle, the Statue of Liberty, and Liberty Bell.  Next week, we will learn about the Constitution since Constitution Day is September 17.

Book Order
Just a reminder that this month's book order is due next Friday, September 23.  You can send in the paper order form with a check or order electronically.  Go to scholastic.com/readingclub, enter our class code (HD3JG), shop and submit your order!

Snack
As a reminder, please send a healthy snack with your child every day.  We are also a peanut free classroom due to allergies.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

I hope that you have a wonderful weekend!
